Canada, with a Pair of Cardinals, Wins FIFA U-20 World Cup Opener

KOBE, Japan - With Louisville juniors Christine Exeter and Rachel Melhado in the starting lineup, Canada opened the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women?s World Cup with a 6-0 win over Argentina on Monday.

Exeter (Pickering, Ont./Pickering HS) had an assist while playing all 90 minutes in the win. She was also taken down in the box early in the match, which led to a red card for Argentina and the first goal for Canada on a penalty kick.

After starting the match, Melhado (Brampton, Ont./Turner Fenton SS) was rested in the second half in preparation for the next match.

Up next, Canada (1-0) will continue group play against Norway (0-1) on Thursday in Kobe. Team Canada will complete group play next Monday in Saitama, Japan.

Following group play, the top two teams from each of the four groups advanced to tournament portion of the event. Quarterfinal matches are set for Aug. 30-31, while semifinal matches are scheduled for Sept. 4. The gold medal and bronze medal matches are set for Sept. 8. Exeter and Melhado will return to the Cardinals immediately following Canada's final match at the World Cup.
