Flooring Contractor - The Flooring Company Carpet Warranty Scams

Request Reprint | Print | About Author | Report Problem | Tweet This Some flooring company's try to justify their higher prices by selling a customer on the great warranty a carpet manufacture offers. Flooring sales reps tell a customer a carpet is warranted for 20 years to build value in a customer's mind to justify the high price they are being given. Don't fall for it!!! A carpet warranty is next to impossible to have enacted. The further the time distance between the install date and the time requested that it be replaced due to warranty reasons only gets harder and harder to enact. If you are worried about carpet warranty then never listen to the salesman! Get a physical copy and read the warranty yourself. If you read the fine print most carpet manufactures require home owners to have a commercial carpet cleaning every 6 months. If you can't prove this and even miss it one time by one day your warranty in null and void. Don't pay high prices for carpet for a warranty that is not going to ever be honored in the first place.

Another scam is when a flooring company salesman try's to sell a customer an upgraded pad in the hopes of getting a higher commission. Some carpet manufacturers only warranty certain types of padding to be used with their carpet. Thicker padding makes a carpet flex more, which can cause the backing on the carpet to break down faster. In most cases a 6lb or 8lb pad is recommended. Anything more or less may void a carpet manufactures warranty.

Then you try to complain to the manufacturer, "Well it's what the flooring company sold me." And the carpet manufacturer hands you a tissue and says too bad go cry because we will not warranty this carpet as it has a pad that conflicts with our warranty. Once again you the home owner get screwed.

The Carpet Weight Scam

One factor that accounts for carpet pricing is its weight. Carpet is sold by weight; the more ounces the better the carpet. A 48 once carpet is less expensive than a 90 ounce carpet as the thicker 90 ounce carpet has more material and thus, should cost more.

Well flooring companies will sell a carpet based on over all weight and not its face weight. The face weight is what you the customer are paying for. The face weight is the weight of the carpet without the backing. Flooring companies will tell a customer a carpet is 48 ounces when really if you take away the backing it is less. When Texas Best Flooring Company offers carpeting to its customers we sell carpet based on face weight. We always catch our competitors telling customers they can match our pricing with the same carpet weight when really its 5 ounces less.

Golden Rule: Make sure you understand the real weight of the carpet you are buying so you can compare apples to apples.

Some Carpet collections are made of different weights. For example on Texasbestflooringcompany.com we sell 10 carpet collections that have 3 different weights. Each carpet in the collection is the same color but comes in three different weights; 48 ounce, 70 ounce, and 90 ounces. Carpets are made in this manner so that customers can put the same carpet in their home but save money by putting the lesser weight carpet in the bedrooms and the heavier weight carpets in the main areas or where it will be seen by others. Flooring companies use this system to rip customers off. They show the customer the 90 ounce carpet and sell it to customer for $4-$5.00 a Square Foot then on the day the carpet is to be installed a 70 or 48 ounce carpet is brought to your home instead allowing the flooring company to make thousands more in profit on your project.
