Boehner to House GOP: Play offense on Medicare

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Speaker John Boehner has told rank-and-file House Republicans they can use the political tussle over Medicare to their advantage.

In a conference call with members Tuesday night, Boehner told lawmakers running for re-election that their best defense is to go on offense on jobs, the economy and Medicare, the government-run health care program for seniors.

Mitt Romney's selection of Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate has pushed the Medicare issue to the forefront. Ryan's budget, backed by House Republicans, would transform the program into a voucher system for those younger than 55.

President Barack Obama and Democrats argue that Ryan's budget would end Medicare in its current form.

A congressional aide provided details about the call anonymously because it was a private discussion among lawmakers.
