Not everyone goes to the gym to buff up like the cast of Jersey Shore. Some students would rather go to the Eppley Recreation Center (ERC) to play sports like basketball and racquetball rather than run on the treadmill and lift weights.
?I play basketball at Eppley about three times a week,? said sophomore civil engineering major Tyreese Garrick. ?I?ve played basketball all my life and it?s definitely more entertaining than just lifting weights.?
Though Garrick is female, she usually goes to the ERC by herself and joins pick-up games with the guys.
?I grew up playing with my cousins and guy friends, so it?s normal for me,? she said. ?I?m just glad the gym provides a court where I can play, or else I would have to find transportation to a gym off campus.?
The ERC offers 125 different types of fitness equipment, from treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, rowers and climbers to free weights and specialized machines, but there are also plenty of sports facilities, such as the two multi-use gymnasiums for full court basketball and six racquetball courts.
Freshman engineering major Eric Schwartz flocks to the ERC with a group of friends to play basketball and racquetball.
?The four of us go once or twice a week for an hour or so,? Schwartz said. ??I don?t understand the point of going to the gym and just working out all the time. Playing sports is a more fun, full-body workout.?
Allison Gray, a junior print journalism major who goes to the ERC to play racquetball and volleyball with friends, likes to talk and make memories with them. She enjoys the competitive and interactive elements of playing games.
?Working out gets boring fast,? she said. ?It?s so static?you just listen to headphones and stay in one place.?
The two multi-use gymnasiums are also used for badminton, and volleyball. Additionally, there are two squash courts and a table tennis facility.
?If you?re just looking to get exercise, it?s more effective to just work out,? Gray said. But if you want to have fun, too, play a game.?
