College football: Regis Scafe out as John Carroll coach

Regis Scafe is out as John Carroll football coach.

The university made the announcement late Thursday. According to JCU athletic director Laurie Massa, "the search for a replacement is underway. We hope to name a new football coach by December 1, 2012."

Massa also said, "This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is in the best interest of our Blue Streaks football program."

Under Scafe, the Blue Streaks were 6-4 this season, and 88-56 in 14 seasons at JCU. He also coached five years at Case Western Reserve, and has a career mark of 104-90 in 19 seasons.

His best season was in 2002, when he guided JCU to the semifinals of the Division III NCAA playoffs and won a school-record 12 games.

Since the '02 season, the Blue Streaks are 55-45.

JCU senior wide receiver Lane Robilotto, a Riverside graduate, was surprised by the school's announcement Scafe would no longer be its football coach.

"Actually, there were rumors going around that coach would be retiring after this year," said Robilotto. "I think a lot of guys were really surprised he wasn't able to retire and he would be let go. It's too bad he wasn't able to leave on his own terms."

Sophomore defensive back Marty Gibbons of Lake Catholic said, "there was definitely a shock factor when I heard the news."

"He was a big reason why I came to John Carroll," said Gibbons. "I thought he was a great leader and a coach, and he was someone I looked up to."
