Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst recycled an attack ad against Republican Senate run-off rival Ted Cruz just hours before their first one-on-one debate in Dallas tonight.
The 30-second TV spot, titled ?Deceiving Texans,? sounds a familiar tune in the Senate race: Cruz, a Houston-based lawyer and the state?s former solicitor general, represented a Chinese company that was found guilty of violating a Florida businessman?s patent.
The ad is nearly identical to a Dewhurst ad from a month ago. The difference is the last ten seconds.
In the first ad, Dewhurst?s narrator shames Cruz, saying ?Mr. Cruz, killing American jobs is NOT conservative.? The ad ends with Jordan Fishman, the American tire businessman, ?saying, ?there?s too many people like Ted Cruz in Washington today.?
In the new ad, the Dewhurst campaign tries to hang Cruz with his own words, playing a radio clip where Cruz said, ?I am listed as the counsel of record.?
It?s a partial quote from a radio interview with State Sen. Dan Patrick from May. The full quote from Cruz: ?I?m listed as the counsel of record, which is the lawyer that receives the service. But I didn?t write the brief, I didn?t argue the case. I?ve never appeared in any courtroom in regard with that case, which he knows, and he?s deliberately ? my role was assisting in editing the briefs.?
The new ad closes by saying that Cruz is ?defending China,? and ?deceiving Texans.?
Cruz, who has accused Dewhurst of lying about the case, will have a chance to confront his opponent about the ad in the KERA debate tonight at 8 p.m.
